Abdominoplasty: Types of Procedures

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure for men and women generally in good shape and health but who have large fat deposits around their abdomen or have and excess of loose skin. Abdominoplasty can reduce protruding abdominal fat but it does leave a lengthy, permanent, sometimes visible scar that runs the length of the hipbones. Most people who undergo abdominoplasty are women who don?t intend to bear more children and whose previous pregnancies stretched their abdominal muscles or people suffering from obesity whose skin elasticity has diminished. Depending upon the amount of excess fat and skin a patient has and the area of the excess, different types of abdominoplasty procedures can be performed.

Tummy Tuck

During a tummy tuck, an incision is made along the length between the hipbones and around the belly button, the skin is removed along the abdominal wall up to the ribs, the vertical muscles of the abdomen are tightened and the flap of excess abdominal fat is removed and the skin is pulled down, cut off and the remaining flap is sewn back into place along the initial incision.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini-abdominoplasty, often paired with tumescent liposuction, is a more limited procedure, but still effective for many people, including those who have only lost muscle tone and skin elasticity in the lower region of the abdomen below the belly button. This surgery can be just as effective and the incision can be smaller and recover time is less. Thus this can be the solution for people with only a slight tummy problem.

Endoscopic Tummy Tuck

Endoscopic tummy tuck is abdominoplasty aided by an endoscope, a tiny camera, and is best for people who have excess fat below the belly button alone but have not lost skin elasticity. Muscles can be tightened and fat can be removed through liposuction via tiny holes made above the pubis or through the belly button. This is a very popular procedure because it leaves little scarring unlike more t! radition al tummy tuck procedures. However there is a risk of infection if the incision doesn?t drain properly.

Panniculectomy Surgery

Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the large/long overlap of skin on the lower abdominal area. This usually occurs in morbidly obese individuals who have lost a substantial amount of weight. Without correcting this problem, there is a risk of developing chronic and persistent local skin conditions such as intertrigo, intertriginous dermatitis, cellulites, ulcerations, necrosis, and inflammation of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Panniculectomy is unlike abdominoplasty because it does not deal at all with abdominal muscles. Panniculectomy is simply the removal of excess fat and skin from the ?apron? left hanging anywhere from just barely above the mons pubis down to the knees or beyond.

Misdiagnosed Pleural Mesothelioma

Let us take the scenario of a seventy-year-old man, who is a nonsmoker and otherwise fairly healthy, approaching the local doctor with complaints of persistent cough, chest congestion and weight loss. Other symptoms may include difficulty in swallowing and loss of appetite. The physician has several options of diagnosis, but pleural mesothelioma, a lethal cancer that originates in the lining enveloping the lungs, may not be considered.

There are several reasons for this. Recognition of pleural mesothelioma as a separate disease entity started as recently as the 1960s. Currently only about 3000 cases are reported annually in the United States. Many doctors may not have seen a single such case during their career. The symptoms are similar to many lesser afflictions. The only general lead is that the disease seems to be more prevalent in the Pacific and Mid-Atlantic States. It is also known that the major cause for pleural mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. But how much contact with the material leads to this disease is unclear. Even the family members of an asbestos worker are at risk from the dust he carries home on his body and clothing.

This form of cancer has a long latent period and the symptoms manifest only twenty to forty or more years after exposure to asbestos. This also vitiates the possibility of correct diagnosis.

Once the doctor eliminates the chances of other diseases and pursues the pleural mesothelioma line, the patient is subjected to a battery of tests and imaging procedures like x-ray and CT scan. Fluid collection in the thoracic cavity is an indicator, but not conclusive. Confirmation can be obtained with a pleural (pleura is the membrane covering the lungs) biopsy using an electron microscope.

Since pleural mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer, early detection and immediate introduction of appropriate management are of critical importance. The possibility of a doctor who fails to diagnose pleural mesothelioma or misdiagnoses it, being sued for medical mal! practice cannot be totally ruled out. But usually the law applicable is asbestos product liability.

It is generally accepted that pleural mesothelioma is a disease that is difficult to diagnose. To help the doctor, the patient should inform him at the very outset about exposure to asbestos, if any.

Face Lift Without Surgery

As we age facial muscles weaken, and skin begins to sag. But just as gym workouts can promote the body's youthful strength and suppleness, facial exercise - based on the same principles of dynamic resistance - can strengthen facial muscles. If sagging muscles in your face chin and neck are aging you beyond your years there is a way to reverse the process and make you look healthier, more vibrant, younger.

Facial exercise can transform your looks without cosmetic surgery. One thing facial exercises won?t do is cause wrinkles, but some people think they do. This is absolutely wrong. Properly done facial exercise most certainly does not cause wrinkles.

In fact, exercising the face helps to make women and men look younger for longer, by toning and tightening the facial muscles, just like toning the muscles of the body firms them up.

But, don't make the mistake of thinking that all facial exercise programs are the same. Expensive devices will not give you better results. Electrodes are very hard to position properly and can be painful if you have sensitive skin.

Sagging, bagging and deep hanging folds in older looking faces are, caused by lack of facial tone. Exercising the muscles in your face is crucial to maintaining a young appearance. Beauty treatments with creams can't lift sagging muscles.

Surgical facelifts can be costly, painful and sometimes dangerous. Give your face a structured work out and you?ll reap the benefits for all the years to come. Our program includes deep breathing to enhance your exercises. The deep breathing will not only bring extra oxygen to your facial muscles, but to your whole body. Oxygen is the key to these exercises.

Some surgeons even give facial exercises to their patients after their face-lift. Why not, just skip the surgeon and do the exercise? A good facial exercise program lifts and tones the facial muscles. My program comes with a guarantee, and I have yet to refund any money. Magnetic Therapy for Arthritis Pain Relief

There are over 100 forms of arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. These diseases may cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in joints and other supporting structures of the body such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Some forms can also affect other parts of the body, including various internal organs.

Many people use the word arthritis to refer to all rheumatic diseases. However, the word literally means joint inflammation; that is, swelling, redness, heat, and pain caused by tissue injury or disease in the joint. The many different kinds of arthritis make up just a portion of all rheumatic diseases.

Rheumatoid arthritis, the second most common form of arthritis, affects other parts of the body besides the joints. It begins at a younger age than osteoarthritis, causes swelling and redness in joints, and may make people feel sick, tired, and (uncommonly) feverish. Rheumatoid arthritis affects people differently. For some people, it lasts only a few months or a year or two and goes away without causing any noticeable damage. Other people have mild or moderate forms of the disease, with periods of worsening symptoms, called flares, and periods in which they feel better, called remissions. Still others have a severe form of the disease that is active most of the time, lasts for many years or a lifetime, and leads to serious joint damage and disability.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, especially among older people. Sometimes it is called degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis. Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that mostly affects the cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over one another. It also absorbs energy from the shock of physical movement. In osteoarthritis, the surface layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint. Over time, the joint may lose its! normal shape. Also, bone spurs(small growths called osteophytes) may grow on the edges of the joint. Bits of bone or cartilage can break off and float inside the joint space. This causes more pain and damage. People with osteoarthritis usually have joint pain and limited movement. Unlike some other forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis affects only joints and not internal organs.

Magnetic treatments for arthritis

All types of arthritis respond to magnetic treatments because the arthritic disease process involves inflammation. Magnets reverse the inflammatory process, which in turn alleviates the main symptoms of arthritis which are:

1.Swelling

2.Pain

3.Stiffness and immobility

Magnetic therapy is not a cure for arthritis as there is currently no known cure, but it is an extremely effective drug free treatment for the chronic symptoms for all types of arthritic conditions.

However having said how well arthritis responds to magnetic therapy, it can be a little bit tricky to treat a person who has arthritis in multiple locations in the body. The reason for this is that as discussed in chapter 2 for the magnetic field to be effective it must be placed as close to the area of injury as possible. When a person has, for example, arthritis in the knees, hips, back and hands, it is not possible to reach all the area with one magnetic device. The person would need to place magnets on each area of pain to fully relieve the arthritic symptoms.

Possible treatments for this person would be: 1. To wear high strength magnetic straps around the knees, back/hips ( usually one strap will reach both areas) and wrists. Straps are both functional and comfortable, plus many contain lycra to give the joint additional support. 2. To wear super strength shoe insoles, that have a magnetic field that is strong enough to reach the knees, a high/super a strength bracelet for each hand and use a magnetic pad behind the back whilst sitting or lying. If the person does not feel comfortable ! in strap s these are suitable alternatives. 3. To sleep on a magnetic mattress. The mattress will reach all areas of the body at once and the strength of the magnetic field is so immense that the magnetism will last for up to 16 hours after getting out of bed. This is the easiest way to treat large areas of pain and does not necessitate the need to wear additional magnets during the day.

Luckily there is a vast array of magnetic devices available today and most areas of the body can be reached with an appropriate magnetic device. There is often more than one solution available fort he treatment of multiple areas of pain and a trained therapist will be able to advise while treatment regime will fit best with your particular lifestyle.

In order for magnets to be effective they must be worn night and day until the symptoms have gone, if you are given a magnetic device that do not feel comfortable wearing or using it is unlikely that you will continue to use the treatment for the required length of time. With out 24 hours, 7 days a weeks exposure to the magnets it is unlikely that all of your symptoms will be relieved and you will feel disheartened and may even believe that magnets do not in fact work.

Debbie Shimadry is qualified magnetic therapist and pain nurse specialist. She appears on several BBC radio stations as an expert guest on magnetic therapy and is also the managing director of leading magnetic therapy company worldofmagnets.co.uk. Acne: An Adult Dilemma As Well

Acne is often regarded as a major teenager?s problem. But there are several adults who also suffer from what we call ?adult acne?. Adults in their twenties and beyond can still experience acne, and the negative effects of stress aid to the strain of having it pop up in their face.

Studies show that mental stress can be a major cause in developing acne for adults. Moreover, women are likely to suffer from it because they are more exposed to stress which they acquire throughout their daily lifestyle. They are also prone to hormonal imbalances, especially at times when they have their monthly menstruation and during pregnancy.

The environment is another factor in developing adult acne. If your surroundings are always dirty, most likely all the dust will be carried through the wind and eventually land on your face. If left unwashed, these dust and dirt can clog up your pores and infect them making the pore inflamed.

Just like teen acne, the best treatment that you can avail of is maintaining proper skin care and a healthy personal hygiene. Take a bath everyday, and use mild soap only so that your acne wont further develop into an infection.

Also watch out for your diet. Drink enough water and exclude from your meal some oily foods. Eat more fruits and vegetables.

Take enough sleep and rest. It will relax your skin pores and eventually prevent acne from developing.

The lifestyle of an adult is an important factor in the appearance of adult acne as well. Avoid drinking liquor, alcohol-based beverages and smoking. It will just make your face riddled with acne.

You can also take some acne medications like skin care products and skin treatments. Just see your dermatologist so that he/she can determine which treatment would be right for you.

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

I just dread being alone at night. I don?t know why, but I do......

My thoughts won?t shut off. They?re constantly running, making me worry, worry, worry......

Will I ever be my old self again?

I can?t remember ever feeling relaxed and calm....What would that be like?

I?m always on edge.....

I hate having to go to work anymore. I haven?t always been this way.....

Generalized anxiety disorder is a relatively common anxiety problem, affecting 3-4% of the population, that turns daily life into a state of worry, anxiety, and fear. Excessive thinking and dwelling on the what ifs characterizes this anxiety disorder. As a result, the person feels there?s no way out of the vicious cycle of anxiety and worry, and then becomes depressed about life and the state of anxiety they find themselves in.

Generalized anxiety usually does not cause people to avoid situations, and there isn?t an element of a panic attack involved in the prognosis, either. It?s the thinking, thinking, thinking, dwelling, dwelling, ruminating, ruminating, and inability to shut the mind off that so incapacitates the person. At other times, thoughts seem almost non-existent because the anxious feelings are so dominant. Feelings of worry, dread, lack of energy, and a loss of interest in life are common. Many times there is no trigger or cause for these feelings and the person realizes these feelings are irrational. Nevertheless, the feelings are very real. At this point, there is no energy or zest in life and no desire to want to do much.

This emotional fear and worry can be quite strong. If a loved one is ten minutes late, the person with generalized anxiety fears the very worst -- something?s dreadfully wrong (after all, they?re ten minutes late!), there?s been an accident, the paramedics are taking the person to the hospital and his injuries are just too critical to resuscitate him.....Oh, my God!.....WHAT AM I GOING TO DO? Feelings of fear and anxiety rush in from these thoughts, and the vici! ous cycl e of anxiety and depression runs wild.

Some people with generalized anxiety have fluctuations in mood from hour to hour, whereas others have good days and bad days. Others do better in the morning, and others find it easier at the end of the day. These anxiety feelings and moods feed on themselves, leading the person to continue in the pattern of worry and anxiety -- unless something powerful breaks it up.

Physical manifestations of generalized anxiety may include headaches, trembling, twitching, irritability, frustration, and inability to concentrate. Sleep disturbances may also occur. Elements of social phobia and/or panic may sometimes be present, such as high levels of self-consciousness in some situations, and fear of not being able to escape from enclosed spaces.

It is also common, but not universal, for people with generalized anxiety to experience other problems, such as a quickness to startle from it, a lack of ability to fully relax, and the propensity to be in a state of constant motion. It is difficult for some people with generalized anxiety to settle down enough to have a quiet, reflective time where they can calm down, relax, and feel some peace and tranquility. Strategies to peacefully calm down and relax are one part in overcoming this problem.

Normal life stresses aggravate generalized anxiety. The person who typically performs well at work and receives a sense of accomplishment from it, all of a sudden finds that work has become drudgery. If work is perceived as a negative environment, and the person no longer feels fulfilled, then considerable worry takes place over these situations. As a result, the anticipatory anxiety about going to work can become quite strong.

Generalized anxiety has been shown to respond best to cognitive-behavioral therapy, an active therapy that involves more than just talking to a therapist. In CBT, the person gradually learns to see situations and problems in a different perspective and learns the methods and techniques to use t! o allevi ate and reduce anxiety. Sometimes medication is a helpful adjunct to therapy, but for many people it is not necessary. Research indicates that generalized anxiety is fully treatable and can be successfully overcome over the course of about three to four months if the person is motivated and works toward recovery.

Generalized anxiety must be chipped away from all sides and that is what CBT is designed to do. No one has to live with generalized anxiety disorder......treatment for GAD has been shown to be both effective and successful.

Please seek a therapist who understands anxiety and the anxiety disorders. Remember, that just because a person has a degree behind their name, does not mean they understand and can treat an anxiety disorder. Feel free to ask questions of any professional and make sure your therapist understands and knows how to treat generalized anxiety. It is usually a good idea to see a specialist in this area (they don?t charge more), but they do have a practice that is geared toward the anxiety disorders.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by 6 months or more of chronic, exaggerated worry and tension that is unfounded or much more severe than the normal anxiety most people experience. People with this disorder usually expect the worst; they worry excessively about money, health, family, or work, even when there are no signs of trouble. They are unable to relax and often suffer from insomnia. Many people with GAD also have physical symptoms, such as fatigue, trembling, muscle tension, headaches, irritability, or hot flashes.

Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), effective treatments have been developed to help people with GAD.

How Common is GAD?

About 2.8% of the U.S. population (4 million Americans) have GAD during a year's time.

GAD most often strikes people in childhood or adolescence, but can begin in adulthood, too. It affects women more often than men.

What Causes GA! D?

Some research suggests that GAD may run in families and it may also grow worse during stress. GAD usually begins at an earlier age and symptoms may manifest themselves more slowly than in most other anxiety disorders.

What Treatments Are Available for GAD?

Treatments for GAD include medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Can People with GAD Also Have Other Physical and Emotional Illnesses?

Research shows that GAD often coexist with depression, substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders. Other conditions associated with stress, such as irritable bowel syndrome, often accompany GAD. Patients with physical symptoms such as insomnia or headaches should also tell their doctors about their feelings of worry and tension. This will help the patient's health care provider to recognize that the person is suffering, from GAD.

Anxiety & Sleep

Sleep - is a basic human need at any age, as essential for good health as a proper diet and regular exercise. A good night's sleep refuels the body's energy, gives our active brains a rest, and puts us mentally in a better mood.

One of the greatest frustrations we all face at some point is not being able to fall asleep. We toss and turn, worry about the next day's activities.

Anxiety & Sleep

National Sleep Foundation

Sleep for Kids

Drowsy Driving

Clock and count how many minutes we have left before morning. For many, though, insomnia is much more than a one-night annoyance. Insomnia is the clinical term for those who have trouble falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, or waking too early in the morning. Caused by a multitude of physical and emotional problems, insomnia can be diagnosed as short-term or long-term, depending on when the patient feels that the loss of sleep is a problem.

For individuals with an anxiety disorder, insomnia closes the loop on a vicious cycle of symptoms that can exacerbate these disorders. Many of the culprits that prey on anxiety sufferers - excessive stress, ! persiste nt worry, obsessive thoughts, gastrointestinal problems, and nightmares - also rob them of their precious sleep. In addition, certain antidepressants often prescribed for the treatment of an anxiety disorder can cause sleep difficulties.

Conversely, research has shown that chronic sleep problems are associated with an increased risk of anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life. Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome also interfere with good sleeping habits, thereby contributing to the possibility of mental impairment. The vicious cycle continues.

Whether sleeplessness creates the anxiety, or the disorder causes the insomnia, the risks of inadequate sleep go way beyond just being tired. Skipping the necessary hours of sleep can result in many negative consequences including, poor work or school performance, increased risk of injury, and poor health, as well as, impaired judgment and bad moods. In children, sleep disorders are linked to learning problems, slow growth, bedwetting and high blood pressure.

Dos & Don'ts for Sleeping Soundly

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommends an average of seven to nine hours of sleep each night for most adults and even more for children and adolescents. Yet, nearly 25% of adults in America (47 million people) don't even get the minimum amount of sleep they need to be fully alert the next day. To manage anxiety symptoms, and to ensure good health, make sleep a priority for you and your family. Here are some tips from the NSF to enjoying better sleep:

Dos

Make time for sleep. Block out seven to nine hours for a full night of uninterrupted sleep.

Establish a regular bedtime routine for children that includes 15 to 30 minutes of calm, soothing activities.

Set the stage for a good night's sleep. Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark and quiet. Get into bed only when you are sleepy.

If you don't fall asleep within 15 minutes, get out of bed, go to another room, and do something! you fin d relaxing.

Talk to your doctor if you have sleep problems. A doctor can discuss with you about the number of prescribed and herbal sleep remedies available. Sweet dreams!

Don'ts

Engage in stimulating activities right before going to sleep. Watch TV or use the computer before going to bed. Eat or drink before bedtime.

Exercise within three hours before you want to fall asleep. The ideal time to work out is early afternoon, because about 5 to 6 hours later your body temperature will drop and this will help you sleep better.

Consume large amounts of caffeine, like soda and chocolate. Use nicotine products. Nicotine is a stimulant.

Fight Depression and Fatigue Naturally

Today we are going to teach you about a natural and effective way to fight depression and fatigue.

Besides its physical health benefits, exercise is often said to help people simply feel good. And a growing number of studies are showing that these mood-boosting effects may even fight clinical depression.

Researchers found that walking for 30 minutes each day quickly improved the patients' symptoms--faster, in fact, than antidepressant drugs typically do. The results indicate that, in selected patients with major depression, aerobic training can produce a substantial improvement in symptoms in a short time.

Previous studies have suggested that exercise is a potent mood-booster, and some research indicates that for some patients regular activity may be a better depression treatment than psychotherapy or medication. Exactly why is unclear, but exercise does influence certain mood-related hormones. And it is also believed to enhance people's sense of control over their lives.

In one study that compared exercise with antidepressants among older adults, investigators found that physical activity was the more effective depression-fighter. (British Journal of Sports Medicine April 2001;35:114-117)

We are not talking about running a marathon, just walking as little as 30 minutes can improve symptoms!

I personally have felt these amazing effects after starting an exercise program when I have been in a mental rut. Believe me, it will help you too!

Choose Tried and True Rather Than Complex and Expensive

As we mature in years a huge amount of complex multi named ailments and remedies attempt to grab the attention of every runner of the race. Most of us will ?discover? a need whilst reading from the growing multitude of medical based articles.

Medical science has produced an array of potions, tonics, operations and prescriptions that have certainly played a positive role in many lives. Many remedies however are far more outlandish than simple healthy diet, mouthpower and a collection of breathing and body exercises but clever advertising, fear based articles and programs have ensured massive acceptance.

Wisdom is necessary to discern whether a new discovery is to help us finish a winner or a confused side tracker.

There is an alternative which does not require a major bank balance nor a fasting and praying program.

Simplicity has tended to reduce the effects and similar respect required of genuine, simple, effective and low cost remedies and restorative processes made available through the Father.

Basic good health, good eyesight, a peaceful mind, a fresh skin, healthy hair and strong muscles are all necessities for that better end and possible for all.

The user certainly has a choice but in most cases a simple product or process with obvious 2000year usage should far surpass the benefits of a complex compound.

"Do you suffer from Osteoarthritis? Here's how to tell!"

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA). This type of arthritis is commonly referred to as wear and tear arthritis or degenerative arthritis.?

While this condition probably begins in the early teen years, it does not become symptomatic until a person reaches their 40?s.

Osteoarthritis affects cartilage, the slippery elastic tissue that covers the ends of long bones. Cartilage functions to absorb shock from movement and also to provide a gliding surface for the joints. With OA, the cartilage begins to wear away and the underlying bones begin to rub against each other. This leads to pain. As OS progresses, it causes swelling and loss of motion. Bone spurs develop and the joint starts to deform. Microscopic particles of cartilage and bone flake off and cause irritation of the joint lining leading to more inflammation which leads to pain and more damage.

Symptoms of OA include pain or stiffness in a joint particularly after getting out of bed or after sitting for a prolonged period of time. Some people have ?flares? of their symptoms with weather changes. Stiffness and pain in the joints with movement may occur as may ?crunchiness?.

Some people report no symptoms. One study done at the National Institutes of Health showed that one third of patients with osteoarthritis on x-ray had no symptoms.

While any joint may be affected, the most common areas of involvement are weight-bearing parts of the skeleton such as the neck, low back, hips, and knees. The great toe and the base of the thumb are also common locations. In older women the last row of finger joints and the next to last row of finger joints may be affected. Less common sites are the shoulders, elbows, ankles, and jaws.

Many factors including the way people use their joints. Occupational experiences also play a role. For instance, miners and dockworkers may develop knee OA while farmers have a higher incidence of OA of the hip. Ballet dancers can also develop ! OA in th e feet, ankles, and hips. Athletes also fall into a high risk category with women soccer players being more likely to develop knee OA as a result of prior injury. Other athletic activities which cause joint trauma also can be a trigger for the development of OA.

Obesity is a major risk factor for OA of the hips and knees. The famous Framingham study showed that obese women had the most severe OA.

People with other types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout are at increased risk for developing OA also.

Probably the most significant risk factor is genetic. Patients with a strong family history of OA are at high risk themselves for developing OA. This is most likely a result of defects in cartilage metabolism which hastens wear and tear.

Acne Treatment Options

It is presumed that around seventy percent of all teenagers and young adults suffer from some forms of acne. However, men and women in their mid ages can also suffer from acne. Though the exact cause of acne remains unclear, more is known about how the spots and blemishes which are part of acne form. Of late, there are innumerable numbers treatments to help deal with this distressing condition.

Acne is not a common complaint; it is known to be a source of considerable emotional distress and social embarrassment. How ever, there are a large numbers of acne treatment options to tackle this problem.

Home treatment option is the most common among the most households; acne treatment method being very simple and mostly improvised over experience gained over years. Always try to keep the spot-prone areas very clean, so wash the affected area twice a day with a un perfumed and non oily cleanser. Antibacterial face washes and soaps specifically for greasy skins are also available. How ever, your skin needs a minimum amount of oil in your skin to maintain its natural condition. Thus it is required to avoid aggressive washing action with hard soaps.

Never pick at spots; over squeezing can cause permanent scarring. During summer months, acne tends to be less problematic as the sunshine helps to dry the skin. How ever, no home treatment will start working immediately; it can take weeks, if not months, to observe any noticeable healing results. Non prescription remedies though over-the-counter remedies are also used to treat acne. Lotions with Benzoyl peroxide have the tendency to dry out the skin and encourage it to shed the surface layer of dead skin. Benzoyl peroxide also displays an antibacterial action. Cumulatively, these combined effects make it harder for oily pores to become blocked and for infection to develop. Benzoyl peroxide can cause redness and peeling, especially during the initial stages. How ever, this tends to settle down within a few days.

To get acne treatment, if you c! onsult y our physician, you will be prescribed, some times, to start treatment with a preparation containing Benzoyl peroxide. If these options do not work for you, then there are a range of other treatment options which can either be rubbed onto the skin (topical) or taken in tablet form (oral).

Several topical treatments are available for you to try and test. Azelaic acid, an alternative to Benzoyl peroxide, may cause less skin soreness. Topical Retinoids, medicines based on vitamin A, can be rubbed into the skin once or twice a day. Retinoids work by stimulating the outer layer of skin to flake off, and may cause irritation and skin peeling at the start of treatment. How ever, sun light may make your skin more sensitive with this treatment. Topical anti bacterial solutions may reduce the intensity of the problem. Treatment should be continued for at least six months. Preparations that combine an antibiotic with other acne medication are available.

For treating Acne, more revolutionary methods have been introduced recently, which recommend the use of oral tablets and preparations. Oral antibiotics (tablets), taken daily for around 3 months, is prescribed for inflammatory type of acne. This causes to kill off the bacteria infecting the skin. Many strains of bacteria tend to become resistant to oral medications. The treatment period may extend to 6 months and Benzoyl peroxide, is often also prescribed at the same time. For women, prescription with a standard combined oral contraceptive pill (containing an oestrogen and a progestogen) can improve acne symptoms. How ever, this treatment may not work for all women.

Isotretinoin is a powerful medicine known as an oral retinoid - which also usually exists in topical form. It is prescribed to be used in severe forms of acne that have proved too resistant to other treatments. It works efficiently by drying up oily secretions, which emanates from skin pores. This medication is associated with serious side effects which are highly adverse to patients. I! t can al so damage an unborn baby if taken by a pregnant woman. This medication is prescribed only by your physician.

Acne treatment is known to be very tricky, as the patient infected, faces serious emotional distress during the treatment. Acne treatment is usually prescribed by qualified professionals and their guidance is absolutely necessary.

Acne Facts Myths & Treatment

People of all races suffer from acne, In the US 85% of everyone aged between 12-24 develop some form of acne, that amounts to 17 million people making it the most common form of skin disease.

In the UK 80% of 11-30 year olds will suffer from acne at some point.

Acne symptoms tend to disappear for the majority of people when they reach their 30?s, however people can still suffer from acne well into their 40?s & 50?s.

Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skins oil glands, known as sebaceous glands, which leads to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions more commonly known as pimples or zits. They tend to appear on the face, neck, back, chest & shoulders.

Doctors believe that acne results from several related factors rather than one single cause. One of the most important factors is an increase in hormones called androgens, a male sex hormone. These increase in both boys & girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge making more sebum.

Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.

Heredity or genetics is another factor and researchers believe that acne can be inherited from parents. Studies have shown that many school age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder.

Certain drugs containing androgens or lithium can cause acne. A side effect of steroids can be acne.

Greasy cosmetics can alter the cells of the skin follicles and make them stick together causing plugs which can lead to acne.

Factors which can also cause acne are:

Friction caused by leaning on or rubbing the skin.
Squeezing or picking at blemishes.
Hard scrubbing of the skin.
Environmental irritants such as pollution & high humidity.
Changing hormonal levels in adolescent girls & adult women 2-7 days before their menstrual period starts.
Pressure from bike helmets, backpacks or tight collars.

Myths about causes of acne include.

Greasy ! foods & chocolate are often blamed for acne, but what we eat seems to have little effect.

Acne is cause by dirty skin is another common myth however blackheads & other acne lesions are not caused by dirt.

Stress is often blamed but has no effect in regards to the condition.

Acne treatment

There are 2 ways to treat acne, topical (applied to the skin) or systematic (taken by mouth). Both over the counter (OTC) meaning no prescription is necessary & prescription remedies are available. The goals of treatment are to heal existing lesions, to prevent new lesions forming, stop scarring & minimise psychological stress & embarrassment caused by the disease. Drug treatment is aimed at reducing several problems that play a part in causing acne: abnormal clumping of the cells in the follicles, increased oil production, bacteria & inflammation.

Depending upon the extent of a persons acne it is recommended to try one of several OTC medicines that are topical (applied to the skin) or systematic (taken by mouth) or a combination of both. For prescription remedies you must see your doctor.

Prescription topical medicines can result in side effects, the skin may look worse for a while before hopefully improving. Other side effects include stinging, burning, redness, peeling, scaling or discoloration of the skin.

Similarly some prescription oral medicines can have side effects such as increased tendency to sunburn, upset stomach, dizziness or light-headedness & changes in skin colour. Also some drugs decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills making it necessary to use a backup birth control method.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Are You Often Tired? Searching for a Cure?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is probably one of the most misunderstood diseases in existence today. Many doctors continue to doubt that CFS is even a real disease. Some doctors think CFS is no more than a psychological disorder, or an extended symptom of another disease. CFS is an insidious disease with no absolute connection or root cause being yet discovered. On top of that, there are no constant biological determinants to open the way to objective measurements like brain scans or blood tests for conducting an absolute diagnosis of CFS. So clearly and frustratingly for those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, have great barriers stacked against them from the very beginning.

Surveys indicate that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome impacts more than four in every 1,000 Americans. According to a U.S. study, women suffered the highest rates of CFS. Individuals ages between 40 to 50, suffered CFS more often than any other age group. CFS affects both sexes of all ages, and across all ethnic and racial groups.

What are some of the most common symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

The most identified and common symptoms of CFS are the following:

--A severe exhaustion lasting over six months and which doesn?t get better even after sleep.

--Periods of forgetfulness, memory loss, confusion, or difficulty concentrating

--Tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpits.

--Joint pain without redness or swelling.

--Unrefreshing sleep, or unable to fall asleep

--Fatigue lasting more than 24 hours after exercise.

--Fatigue that significantly disables a person?s ability to behave and function regularly at work, at home, and in social events.

--When minimal exercise intensifies other CFS symptoms.

--Sensitivity to sunlight.

What Can I Do Right Now to Better Cope with CFS?

Here are a few steps you can begin implementing in your life for coping with CFS:

Tip #1: Before you fully accept CFS, be 100% certain that you have it. Locate a clinic tha! t treats CFS and request a diagnostic test to determine if you have this disease.

Tip #2: Eat a well-balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Try to eliminate as much as you can sugar, salt, saturated fat, and animal protein in your meals.

Tip #3: Exercise regularly everyday but do not over do it. Stay within your limits. How? If you cannot tolerate a whole hour of walking, jogging, or cycling without adverse consequences such as sleeping more than your usual, do less.

Tip #4: If you find yourself unable to sleep soundly, consider taking a safe natural remedy that treats insomnia.

Tip #5: If you feel depressed, discouraged, and even defeated because of chronic fatigue syndrome, consider taking a safe natural remedy that treats depression.

Tip #6: CFS patients suffer from a weak immune system. That is why they catch a cold or flu so easily. Supplement your diet with something that strengths your immune system.

Tip #7: Whenever you have time, educate yourself about CFS online and offline. Type in ?chronic fatigue syndrome? in the search engine window and browse. The more you know about CFS, the better you?ll cope with this disease.

I personally have done battle with this enduring and merciless beast. I can honestly confess that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is an affliction not easily identified, or treated. I have learned a great deal through trials and errors what works and what doesn?t. Often I have wasted my hard-earned money on products that did nothing for me.

George Alarcon at http://www.chronic-fatigue-aid.com reveals his personal CFS story, how he fought and learned to boost his energy level back to normal. He freely offers the suffering CFS patient a remarkably easy, fast-acting 2-step remedy for successfully treating CFS. Under More Help at his site you'll also learn how to treat insomnia, depression, and a weak immune system.

Alcoholism

Alcoholism is one of the most disturbing and perturbing issues of the present which is faced by the society and needs to be paid much of a personal and social attention. It is believed to be a very serious disease that ruins human lives, families, health, relationships and simply individual character. In the following article I am going to discuss if alcoholism has any genetic link. Humans are one of the most complex species on the planet there are millions of cells with the human body. Each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes made up of a substance called DNA within DNA is where you will find genes. Genes are the structures which combine together to make us what we are, ?Genetic information directs cellular function, determines an organism?s external appearance, and serves as the link between the generations in every species?. Different combinations of genes are what make us individual and different from previous generations. These different combinations are produced when reproduction occurs.

Part of this process is meiosis ?The process in gametogenesis or sporogenisis during which one replication of the chromosomes is followed by two nuclear divisions to produce four haploid cells?. In other words: a set of chromosomes is replicated and then the two sets of 46 chromosomes (2 diploid cells) are separated into four sets of 23 (four haploid cells) After the nuclear division of a set of chromosomes has taken place 2 sperm/ovum are created so that 23 of the person?s chromosomes can be passed on to their offspring. However meiosis is made much more complicated by a processed called crossing over; this means that the chromosomes can be broken up and sections of the chromosome can switch over and exchange with each other making a unique combination of 23 chromosomes which can be passed on to the offspring

When the gametes from each parent combine at fertilisation ?a zygote (fertilized egg cell) with the full complement of chromosomes is produced?, thus creating an even more unique combin! ation of genetic material. The genes for all the different characteristics are held at certain locations on a pair of chromosomes, for example if there was an abnormality at chromosome 15 at a specific point, a person may have pradea- willi syndrome. There are several different versions of a particular feature i.e. eye colour these are called alleles these contain are made up of different DNA combinations that make different proteins the proteins. If the alleles are the same (homozygous) and for example contain the genetic code for blue eyes then it stands to reason that the person?s will have blue eyes. If the two alleles are heterozygous (different) then the one which holds the more dominant coding will override the other. These two differing genes are called dominant and recessive genes.

Many Biologists and Psychologists alike believe that these processes are the be all and end all of humans and that ?the gene sets a course of action and the individual is a slave to this?. Genes are at the forefront of the nature side of the nature nurture debate. The view that everything we do including our behaviour and thought processes a predetermined by our genes and there are many conditions for which a genetic cause has yet to be found, one of these is alcoholism.

How to Treat Back Acne

Acne is a common problem among both teenagers and adults, and, as more people seek treatment, more information becomes available about this condition. When most people think of acne, they think of it occurring on the face, since that is where it is most commonly seen. That is, however, not the only problem area for the skin where acne can develop.

Acne is common on the back and chest, and is often more difficult to treat when found on these areas. This is, in part, because the skin on the back is tougher than that on the face, so it is necessary to use different skin care products on this area. The back is also in constant contact with clothing and other materials that might irritate the skin, which can further aggravate the condition. Physically it is difficult to cleanse and apply back acne treatment to this area. You might need to ask for assistance from a member of your family, but please don't feel embarrassed and avoid asking.

Acne is caused from excess oils on the skin that build up and form lesions called pimples. Acne prevention is the best way to treat it, but this can be more difficult to do on the back.

As with facial acne, it is important to stick to a daily skin routine especially for this type of acne. This includes a cleanser, lotion, and possibly a moisturizer. Glycolic acid is also said to work well with such a routine.

Another way to try and treat back acne is to try to figure out what could be causing or helping to aggravate it. Heavy backpacks are worn across the upper shoulders and part of the back. If you carry one, especially on a daily basis, and have particular trouble with acne in these areas, you might try switching to a shoulder bag, or pack with carry handles. Once your acne clears up, try wearing the backpack once again. If the irritation returns, you will know at least part of the cause, and may consider other alternatives instead.

The clothing you wear can also affect and irritate your back acne. Tight clothing can rub against your skin! , which will aggravate it, and can also promote sweating. Sweat will, in turn, cause excess oil build-up, which will cause more breakouts to occur.

Rough clothing is also bad for acne prone areas, as it aggravates the afflicted area, which can irritate existing acne and cause new breakouts.

Like other forms of acne, back acne can be mild, moderate, or severe. It is important to recognize the type and severity of your condition so you can treat it accordingly. Skin type also plays a part in the treatment of back acne. Different skin types require different treatments, and react differently to products.

If you are using over the counter products that don't seem to be working to clear up your back acne, seek the advice and care of a physician who can help you find a back acne treatment that is right for you.

5 Element Theory & Oriental Medicine

People have always been looking for ways to understand what's happening with their health. Ancient Chinese philosophers called Taoists, put together a framework for doing this that's still used today in Oriental medicine. It's called Five Element Theory.

The logic of Five Element Theory becomes clear as you begin to use it as a filter for processing your observations regarding things like: how you feel after eating, the types of emotions you're prone too, and the kinds of food you crave.

Working with the Five Element chart, is a fun and informative way to understand how to navigate your way toward health and well-being.

What Is Five Element Theory

Five Element Theory helps you understand how natural changes within your body and outside environment affect your health. To predict and understand these dynamic changes, ancient doctors studied nature to determine what universal principles existed that could be applied to health and well-being. Five Element Theory is what they came up with.

The five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. They were selected based on the observations of ancient Oriental philosophers who theorized that the natural world embodied these elemental characteristics. Oriental medicine uses this time-tested, diagnostic model to analyze how the various parts of a person's body and mind interact to affect health. These relationships are illustrated in the 5 Element Chart, which shows how each element is related to specific aspects of your body and mind.

Invasive Treatments Do They Really Work For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

If you have been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), you may be wondering ? what next? Below you will find information regarding the most common (not the best) treatment options currently in use in the medical industry and their success and failure rates.

If you have received a positive carpal tunnel diagnosis, most doctors will push for cortisone injections and/or surgery, procedures that have poor success rates and ones that should only be performed as a last resort, after all other conservative treatment methods have been utilized.

The following information provides details about what each current procedure entails as well as statistics that reveal why conservative therapy should be implemented over the following invasive treatment methods.

CORTISONE INJECTIONS FOR CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME:

Cortisone is medication that treats inflammation only. Often the carpal tunnel pain will subside because the inflammation of the median nerve is reduced from the use of the cortisone, but this is only a temporary effect.

The one main problem with cortisone is that for 21 days following the injection, the tendons have the consistency of rubber and can be seriously overstretched and damaged. This is a common side effect that most doctors fail to tell their patients. If the patient continues overusing and/or stressing their hands and wrists, the tendons can overstretch and cause the structural integrity of the joint to diminish greatly, causing the joint to become loose and sloppy, resulting in an even greater possibility of further injury and damage.

Cortisone can be used wisely as a part of a carpal tunnel treatment program along with the implementation of proper stretches add exercises, the most important tool that can be used to recover from carpal tunnel. If cortisone is utilized, it is good for the patient to take this time, when the carpal tunnel is not inflamed, to be on a conservative therapy program to correct the existing muscle imbalance in the wrist joi! nt and e liminate the carpal tunnel symptoms for good. The problem is that most doctors give the cortisone shot and the patient goes home and either does nothing, or does too much, causing greater trauma to the median nerve within the carpal tunnel and exacerbating the symptoms.

Steroid (Cortisone) Injection Statistic:

*Failure rate (Including partial success as failure) is 72.6% after 1-year follow up. Source: Irwin, et al. J Hand Surgery.

SURGERY FOR CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME:

Carpal tunnel surgery consists of releasing (severing) the transverse carpal ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel. Surgery is utilized to open and widen the carpal tunnel in order to allow more room for the median nerve, artery and nine flexor tendons to move around. There are several surgical procedures that are utilized to achieve this:

?Open Release Surgery: A local anesthetic is injected into the wrist and/or hand and a 2-3-inch incision is made in the palm and cuts the carpal ligament free from the underlying median nerve. This operation takes about 20-25 minutes.

??Mini? Open Release Surgery: The mini-open release technique involves an incision that is about 1.5 inches long and can be performed in the doctor's office with only a local anesthetic. The operation takes only about 12 minutes.

?Endoscopic Release Surgery: The Endoscopic technique is less invasive and uses involves one or two .5? inch long incisions in the wrist and or palm, and one or two endoscope (pencil-thin) tubes are inserted. A tiny camera and a knife are inserted through these lighted tubes. While observing the carpal ligament on a television monitor, the surgeon cuts the ligament to free the compressed median nerve.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery Statistics:

*?Only 23% of all Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients were able to return to their previous professions following surgery.? Source: NIOSH

*?Carpal tunnel surgery has about a 57% failure rate following patients from 1-day to 6-years. At least on! e of the following symptoms re-occurred during this time: Pain, Numbness, Tingling sensations.? Source: Nancollas, et al, 1995. J. Hand Surgery.

CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT FOR CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME:

Conservative therapy is really the only key to preventing carpal tunnel syndrome as well as for the successful recovery and long-term relief of existing carpal tunnel symptoms, even for post-surgery patients. For information on implementing effective conservative carpal tunnel therapy and prevention/rehabilitation protocols, read the article titled:

What Does It Mean to be "Green?"

Well, it's kind of like being a vegetarian. There is a wide spectrum. On one end, you have the vegans who don't use any animal products. On the other end, there are some people who consider themselves vegetarian who still eat chicken and fish and use dairy products.

Some green people have opted totally off the grid. They only use sustainable resources in all aspects of their lives. The Dancing Rabbit EcoVillage is an example of this form of ?green living.?

There are some ?green people? who are concerned about leaving a smaller footprint on the planet. They accept the idea that our civilizations do damage to the planet. They accept the idea that some of the damage may be permanent. Their idea is to control the depth and breadth of the damage by incremental personal behavior and society change. An example of their position can be found in their discussion of the replacement of gasoline in cars with fuel cells.

[Side Note: One of politician?s favorite babies to kiss, fuel cell technology, is a great idea. When was the last time you went whizzing by a hydrogen station in your town? It's not going to happen anytime soon. Most of the folks who talk about it in speeches don't mean it. They're just not serious. Have you seen the politicians when they are explaining why a football, baseball or basketball team needs to have a new arena, even when they aren't filling the seats that they already have available? Before they even have the fancy ground breaking ceremony, they have sold all the luxury boxes and are half way through season ticket lotteries. Cities offer outrageous tax incentives to the teams and levy ridiculous taxes on their citizens. That is what a serious idea looks like in this country. The only place you are likely to see a functional car that runs on fuel cells is an auto show.

[Back to my Point: At the very opposite end of the ?green people? spectrum, there are the incidentally ?green.? These are people who happily pay their fossil fuel bills and are only conversational! ly conce rned with their ?foot print.? So, how is it that they can be labeled as ?green? at all? Well, these people accidentally pick up ?green? behaviors because they care about their own existence and quality of life.

Many in this last group have noticed that they have suddenly developed allergies to things they eat. Some of them have noticed a sickly feeling when they wear certain clothes and use certain products. And, some of them have bodies that are waging spectacular all-out revolts in the form of diseases and syndromes.

In short, (I know it's a little late for that) all technology that makes our lives less expensive and more convenient does not make our lives better. Join the ?green people? and find your place on the spectrum. You'll feel good and you'll be better.

Cosmetic Procedures in Thailand

Thailand is called the land of smiles and for a good reason. Like all medical care, cosmetic surgery in Thailand is inexpensive and of a high quality.

Cosmetic Procedures in Thailand

Cosmetic surgery can be an expensive and time consuming experience. When choosing to have a cosmetic procedure, you need to weigh all of your options carefully before committing to having the procedure done. While many people will save their money for years in order to get their cosmetic surgery done by the most trendy doctors in places like New York City and Los Angeles, other patients have found a way around this long wait and expense. More and more, people are taking vacation trips to other countries and combining these trips with cosmetic surgery procedures.

When it comes to taking trips for cosmetic surgery Thailand has been at the forefront of this trend. Since the early 1990's, tourists have been flocking to Thailand for the care of their cosmetic surgeons, clinics, and posh recovery sites. The favorable exchange rate with Thailand combined with less expenses incurred by the surgeons means that patients who choose to have their procedures done here will pay far less than what they would in the United States. Phuket, an island resort in Thailand, has been offering their special brand of cosmetic surgery and vacation atmosphere to patients for years.

When choosing cosmetic surgery, Thailand offers a lot more than just a cheaper place to have your procedure done. Surgeons at the Phuket Cosmetic Surgery Clinic are also world-renowned for a special type of cosmetic surgery ? sex reassignment, or sex change, surgery. They are one of the few clinics in the world that offer this type of surgery, but they are certain not to take such a change in their patients' appearance lightly. Anyone who wants sex reassignment surgery performed here must pass rigorous psychological studies and medical testing before the surgeons will consent to the procedure. Of course, the doctors of Phuket and other cities in T! hailand perform many other types of cosmetic surgery, and the country also offers some of the best spa retreats in the world where you can relax and recover from your surgery in style.

You can also entertain yourself with the many cultural activities that Thailand has to offer, but you must remember some items before planning your trip. There is always some risk to cosmetic surgery, whether you choose to have it performed in the US or Thailand, so be careful to research your doctor and clinics thoroughly before leaving for your trip. Another issue may arise in the language barrier ? be sure that you will have a translator available to help you communicate with medical staff, or that they speak English. Almost all of them speak great English, but we are talking about surgery here. If you keep in mind these few precautions, you can be sure your trip will be a successful one.

Truth be told, I have never had cosmetic surgery in Thailand. When I go every few years, however, I do have a checkup, get my teeth cleaned and so on. The medical care is excellent and inexpensive. Oh, the beaches aren?t to bad either!

Osteoporosis Prevent It Before It Starts

When it comes to preventing osteoporosis, in addition to a healthy diet and supplementing with calcium, vitamins and other minerals - you also need to limit the risk factors by ensuring that you don?t lose excess calcium.

Preventing Osteoporosis - High Risk Factors:

  • Carbonated soft drinks ? these contain a large amount of phosphorous and research has shown a link between too much phosphorous and calcium loss. Teenagers in particular are at extreme risk. Carbonation also neutralizes stomach acid making it harder for you to absorb calcium.
  • Excessive phosphorous in your diet will create poor bone structure. Phosphorous can be found in processed food, soft drinks and processed meat.
  • Excess intake of caffeine, alcohol and sugar will cause calcium to be lost from the body.
  • Cigarette smoking is also a significant risk factor for preventing osteoporosis - the bone mineral contents of smokers significantly lower than in men and women who don?t smoke. Also twice as many women with osteoporosis smoke compared to those women who don?t have osteoporosis.
  • Antacids and pharmaceuticals such as anti-seizure drugs and diuretics can result in decreased absorption of calcium. Diuretics are commonly used to treat high blood pressure, swelling of the lower legs and congestive heart disease. Discuss this osteoporosis prevention measure with your health care professional.
  • Fluoride - evidence suggests that drinking water with fluoride will increase your risk of hip fractures. We have high amounts of fluoride in our drinking water and toothpaste and when eating a normal diet the average person can exceed the recommended dose. If you?re at risk of osteoporosis or want to prevent it, we?d recommend you spend some money on a water filter that removes fluoride.
  • Lack of exercise is definitely a significant factor in the cause of osteoporosis. Exercise keeps your bones strong and healthy and weight-bearing exercise can actu! ally inc rease your bone density and assist in preventing osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises mean exercise where your body impacts eg walking and jogging as opposed to swimming.

Osteoporosis Prevention is Much Easier Than Cure

A very easy way you can prevent osteoporosis is to start improving your nutrient intake - particularly as we get older and for women post-menopause.

One way to do this is to make healthy food and lifestyle choices - and another very easy way to prevent osteoporosis is to supplement with nutrients that actually produce a result. Osteoporosis prevention is all about making sure that your bones are gaining more calcium and other minerals than they are losing.

To achieve this, we recommend you start a supplement program consisting of all 90 essential nutrients for preventing osteoporosis as well as a good calcium/magnesium supplement with additional minerals (including manganese and boron) and vitamins (especially Vitamin D).

Planning like this will make preventing osteoporosis and improved health apart of life and help you to stay active.

Summary

  • Diet - Reducing and eliminating coffee, alcohol, sugar, processed foods and carbonated drinks are involved in preventing osteoporosis.
  • Don?t smoke!
  • Avoid antacids and prescription drugs that cause calcium loss.
  • Drink pure, filtered water as much as you can.
  • Weight-bearing exercises are important.
  • No carbonated drinks - it's so important it's worth saying again.

Lose Weight by Changing Yourself From Within

People who are not overweight cannot understand why some people are fat. After all if you want to lose weight all you have to do is eat less, eat better and exercise more.

Unfortunately this is the way most diet plans approach peoples weight loss issues. Most weight loss plans focus on your actions. They tell you that you have to eat this but not that, you must drink only this and you have to eat by combining your foods in a certain order. You are instructed to exercise until you drop.

While many of these processes can work in the short term - they are not sustainable in the long term. These weight loss plans are generally too restrictive and they require a tremendous amount of will power. Let?s face it, if losing weight were as easy as eating less and exercising more then 100 million Americans would not be over weight.

These weight loss plans always fail to address the root of your weight issues. The root of most weight issues is the ways you think and feel create emotional issues that keep the weight on you. Your thoughts create your feelings; your feelings determine your actions. Your body changes at a cellular level based on how your feeling.

Think about it for a moment. When are you most likely to over eat? During emotionally challenging times such as being under stress, being angry, sad, fearful and even board. Over time the more you over eat due to emotional causes the more your body expects the extra food so you reach a point where you eat just to eat.

Our thoughts create our emotions? Our emotions determine our actions. All of our actions originate first from a thought. Some of these thoughts generate strong emotional responses such as if we?re worried or frightened about something. Anyone who is overweight has emotional triggers to food.

We think of something and have an emotional response to that thought which in turn triggers an eating response. Many times we?re not even aware we doing this, it?s sort of being on automatic pilot. Think about your own t! riggers. Do you ever reach for food or a snack when your under stress or worried? How about if you?re lonely or sad?

Our thoughts create our emotions? Our emotions create our body.

What?s happening inside of us creates what?s happening outside of us. There is no difference to the way our body feels to us then it actually is. Each of us creates our own reality including our body. We believe that what is happening outside of us is what is creating the feeling within us when actually the opposite is true.

The way we feel, the thoughts we have, what we focus on makes internal changes to us on a cellular level that creates our external world.

That?s why no matter what diet we try we ultimately fail. That?s why we keep doing the same things over and over even though we know that it?s detrimental to our weight loss goals.

Diets try to change you from the outside when the only way you can be changed is from the inside. No matter what you do to lose weight you will fail unless you change yourself from the inside, nothing external can work.

The importance of focusing on what your desired out come is and believing that it has already occurred can not be over stated. Scientific studies have shown that if you monitor a persons brain activity a real event is recorded the same as an imagined event within the brain.

If a person was to look at a flag, and then close their eyes and imagine a flag their brain waves would be identical. The same neuro networks are activated, the same neurons are fired.

The brain cannot distinguish between real or imagined events. Your brain cannot distinguish between what?s happening outside to your own internal thoughts. Your brain cannot distinguish between what you see and what you imagine or pretend to see. Now take this a step further. When you close your eyes and picture yourself what do you see? If you modify that picture, your reality will bend to that image.

So why is that important? Your thoughts, beliefs and intents create your re! ality, y our outcome. What you think about you body creates your body. Your thoughts alone can alter your body. Your thoughts create emotions and if the emotions are strong you create memories.

Your hypothalamus is a gland that is rich in fibers and synaptic connections and it controls the functions of the body such as blood pressure, heartbeat, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. The way that it accomplishes this is that your hypothalamus is a chemical factory that creates peptides which are small chained amino acids. These peptides are created based on our emotions.

Different neuro hormones are created based on the emotion we are feeling: Joy, love, happiness, fear, hate and all other emotions that we actually experience or imaging create peptides. At the moment that we experience an emotion, real or imagined hormones are released into the body.

Every cell in your body has receptors for the various hormones that are released. The hormones that are released into the body are attached to the cell through the receptor. This is very similar to a key going into a lock. Once attached the cell will change based on the hormone that has attached to it which ultimately is determined by your emotions.

Each cell is alive with its own consciousness and over time your cell will create more receptors for the predominate hormone being released.

The more receptors for a given emotion that is created will cause the body to create situations the will satisfy the chemical cravings of our cells. The more you experience joy the more joy receptors will be activated within your cells.

The more joy receptors the more your body will create situations that will cause you to feel joyful. This holds true for your weight as well.

The more you feel fat and over weight the more that those receptors become activated thereby causing your body to react in a way that will keep you overweight. Every function of the body is influenced by your emotional state.

In order to break this you must first ! change w ay you think about your body. Then as you become aware of the negative thought patterns that have been contributing to your negative body image you need to choose different thoughts. Most overweight people have thoughts like:
-I will never be able to lose weight
-If I look at food I gain 5 pounds
    -I?m not desirable
    -I?m not good enough
    -I hate my body

It is impossible to lose weight and keep the weight off if you have a negative body image.

Changing your thought patterns is simple to do. Simply focus on things that you do like about your body. You could say to yourself:
    -I have nice eyes
    -I feel strong
    -I feel thinner today
-I love how my body is going to look
    -My children love me

The whole point is to raise your emotional level; you want to feel good about you and your body.

Another useful tool is the ?Wouldn?t it be nice game? When you?re not in a good place emotionally simply say to yourself ?Wouldn?t it be nice if :
    -I lost 20 pounds
-I could fit into that dress
    -I could get into a size 6

By playing the ?Wouldn?t it be nice game? you immediately change your emotional state and feel more positive.

By changing your negative thoughts concerning your body you will change your emotions. You will have a more positive approach to your body and to life. By using this approach you will not have the struggle that you have come to expect when attempting to lose weight.

So start raising your emotional state today!

Arthritis Treatment? Six Arthritis Diets That Work

Arthritis treatment using diet is one of the most popular and successful types of arthritis treatment.

Here I describe 6 types of arthritis diets that are effective as arthritis treatment strategies.

    1. The underlying causes of arthritis for many people is food sensitivities. If you are one of these people, finding out your exact food sensitivities and eliminating these problem foods from your diet can work miracles. The ALCAT blood test is one way to discover if you have any food sensitivities and if so, exactly what they are. Selectively eliminating any suspected problem foods from your diet for a week and then systematically reintroducing them, with at least 24 hours between each reintroduction, is another.

    2. Specific foods have anti-inflammatory properties. Including the spices tumeric, ginger, and cumin in your diet, for instance, calm inflammation without the negative side effects of many prescription arthritis drugs.

    3. Poor digestion is another underlying cause of arthritis. Healing the digestive tract can often heal arthritis. The types of bacteria that flourish in a health digestive system are called probiotics. Taking probiotic pills or eating foods rich in probiotics (such as miso, homemade sauerkraut, live culture yogurt and kefir, and kim chi) are one way to bring the digestive tract into a state of greater health. This is especially true if you have ever taken antibiotics, even years ago.

    4. Cabbage and cabbage juice contain a type of protein called mucins that coat the stomach and allow it to heal. Gelatin also has stomach healing properties, for the same reason.

    5. A good broth made wine or vinegar in the broth to extract the gelatin and other joint building components of cartilage (such as chondroitin and glucosamine) from soup bones, is one cheap and very healing arthritis treatment. Sliced pork trotters, beef feet, rib bones, chicken carcasses and feet, and whole fish are all good starting materials for making arthritis treatment ! broths. Simmer the bones slowly for 4-24 hours to extract the maximum amount of arthritis healing nutrients. These broths are much cheaper and tastier than buying the same thing in pill form.

    6. Arthritis is a disease of acidity. The body become acidic when we eat too much protein and carbohydrate, especially refined carbohydrates like sugar and white flour. Eating 80% of the diet as vegetables is a healthy way to bring the body back into the correct pH range. Once it comes back into the correct range, arthritis will often disappear.

If you are highly acidic, it may take several months or even a year or longer on an alkalizing diet (one high in vegetables, low in protein and carbohydrates) to reestablish a stable, healthy pH balance.

Substitute alfalfa and other teas which are alkalizing, for coffee and soft drinks which contribute to acidity.

It takes a while to neutralize all the excess acidity stored in the body. This is why some people have arthritis treatment success by going on a largely vegetarian diet for a year or more and resuming a vegetarian diet for a while whenever they feel like the arthritis might be starting to come back.

You can test your pH by swallowing several times first thing in the morning before you have eaten anything or had anything to drink. Then spit onto a piece of litmus paper. Ideally the pH of your saliva should be around 7 to 7.2. You can purchase litmus paper for testing the pH of saliva and/or urine in most health food stores.

    CONCLUSION

Even if you are going the conventional arthritis treatment route, incorporating these arthritis treatment diet strategies can make a big difference in how well you feel.

    Muscle Building Mindset

Do you want to build muscle as quickly as possible? If so, are you training with the proper muscle mindset? For optimal success, prior to entering the gym, you must be willing to train like a warrior.

The muscle building mindset doesn't start once you begin training, but prior to setting foot in the gym. A muscle building mindset is mandatory for optimal muscle growth. Muscle isn't added magically, you must force your muscles to grow. Therefore, growth first starts with being in the proper muscle building mindset.

There are three phases to this muscle building mindset. Phase one, the preparatory phase, starts when you are on your way to the gym. This is the time you remind yourself of your clear cut plan of action, prepare for what exactly your program calls for, and what specifically you are going to accomplish. This phase serves to ignite your mind towards the next phase, the training phase.

Prior to setting foot in the gym, you should have a clear mental picture of what goals you want to accomplish. Picture yourself with lean, rippled, pumped-up muscles. Imagine pounds of muscle being packed onto your body. Next you want to picture yourself executing the exercises to complete muscle failure in order to stimulate growth. Picture it! Picture yourself as a warrior conquering the weights.

Now is the time to walk into the gym with your exact workout plan in mind, and knowing how intensely you are going to execute it. As you walk into the gym, you should be worked up and ready to conquer the weights. Your heart rate should be on the rise, your body starting to perspire with anticipation, all ready to attack!

During the second phase, the training phase, you must focus on the task at hand. Your objective is to activate every single muscle fiber within the particular muscle you are targeting. Focus on your muscle fibers firing 96, 97, 98% capacity as you strive for momentary muscle failure. It is also important to focus on the number or reps, and weight needed to beat the prev! ious wor kout. You must strive for an all-out effort with each work set, and the focused mentality to beat those previous numbers.

Once your hopefully short and extremely intense bodybuilding workout has concluded, you will enter the closing phase of the muscle mindset. In the closing phase, get out of the gym, and concentrate on your muscle fibers recovering with strength for the next workout. Highlight the positives of the workout, and strategically plan over the next week what specifically you want to improve upon. If your strength and size hasn't improved after a couple of workouts, your body requires more days off for recovery. Let your body fully recover prior to your next battle in the gym.

With this muscle building mindset, you are bound to succeed! Once again, you must force yourself to grow. It takes a very special mindset to provide enough stimulation to your muscle fibers in order to adapt and grow bigger, and stronger.

So the next time you train, remember this important mental aspect of bodybuilding. You should now walk into the gym with a warrior-like, muscle building mindset to force growth. Anything short of that will slow down the muscle building process.

    The Skin Doesn't Forget

The end of winter, no more short, cold and dark days. Spring is finally here and summer is fast approaching. Hot days and lots of sunshine. But not all fun and sun. The hot sun can pose a great danger for our skin and our children?s skin. In fact, one of the most important factors for feeling young and healthy is the way we take care of our skin during the summer months.

Over the last century, ever-increasing rates of skin cancer have taken some of the greatest tolls on all age groups, young and old. Yet most people don?t realize that skin cancer is a very preventable form of skin cancer, and, that if recognized early enough, is very treatable. The simple fact is, if we take care of our skin during the summer, we can dramatically reduce the chances of ever getting skin cancer in the first place. The chance of getting skin cancer is directly related to the amount of sunlight we expose our skin to, especially during the summer. Furthermore, it has been shown that going to the solarium on a regular basis is also a risk for the development of skin cancer.

Overexposure to UV A and B light from the sun and the solarium damages skin cells. UV A light in spite of its lower energy, is received by the body in much larger doses, and penetrates into the skin easily causing damage. UV light mainly affects the skin and underlying connective tissues by decreasing the quantities of collagen and elastic fibers present in these tissues. With passing time, the skin becomes more wrinkled and flaccid. One of the most important factors in the pathogenesis of cancer is the fact that the absorbed UV light breaks down water molecules and induces the formation of free-oxygen radicals, which are toxic to certain elements of the skin.

For those of us who have a light or very fair complexion, (type I skin tone) avoidance of the sun and solarium as much as possible is recommended. The rest of us should adjust the amount of sun (UV light) exposure to our proper skin tones.

The reason its importan! t to kno w what type of skin tone you have is because the lighter the skin, the less it is capable of dealing with the damaging elements of the sunlight and thus, more the skin needs to be protected.

It?s not difficult to determine what your skin type is. There are six types and by using the scale below, you can determine for yourself how much skin protection you may need.

Skin type I never turns brown, only burns.
Skin type II browns very slowly and easily burns.
Skin type III browns easily and rarely burns.
Skin type IV is typical of that of southern Europeans (Mediterranean type).
Skin type V is slightly pigmented similar to those living in India.
    Skin type VI is black.

If you fall into either of the first two categories, your skin must be protected at all times from the dangerous effects of the sun!!!!!

Skin cancer can be broken down into Melanoma- and non-Melanoma types. The latter consists of both squamous cell- and basal cell skin cancer. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. The proliferation of pigmented skin cells anywhere in the body can, if not diagnosed and treated early, cause death. The frequency of Melanoma around the world is increasing at very rapid rates!!

Squamous cell type of skin cancer is also a malignant form of skin cancer that is directly related to the amount of sun exposure and can quickly spread to other parts of the body.

Basal cell type skin cancer is not malignant and thus wont spread to other parts of the body. However, there is local destruction of the affected skin areas and thus excision of the lesion is a must.

Well, you may ask how do I protect myself from the dangers of the skin cancer? The answers may not be as difficult to follow as you may think. First and foremost, always protect skin of young children and kids. Their skins are sensitive to sun exposure and burning the skin only increases the risk in later years of developing cancer. It is important to remember that the many years of c! ontinuou s sun exposure increase the chance of getting skin cancer. In other words, the skin doesn?t forget!! Sporadic sun exposure is more than enough to guarantee a nice brown skin color and the proper production of vitamin D in the body.

If someone wants to get a quick tan, than be sure to use self-browning creams, but remember, they wont protect your skin from sun overexposure and burning. Carotin derivative products have been shown to protect the skin from within and in general have an anti-cancer effect.

During the hot months, a good rule of thumb is to avoid strong sun exposure in the middle of the day, say between 2 and 3 pm, when the sun is hottest. Try to stay in the shade as much as possible and when going into the sun, put on a hat, sunglasses and a shirt just to be sure. Sun tanning protective creams are also a must. A wide spectrum UV protection and a minimum factor of 15 should be applied to the skin at all times for maximum protection. But remember, the best protection from skin cancer is to avoid the exposure to the skin.

Finally, and equally important, is that we recognize on ourselves any first signs of potential cancer. Especially be aware of any small wounds or scars on the skin that don?t seem to heal after a month or so. Be aware of skin moles that suddenly begin to itch, bleed, peel, grow, change color or become painful. In any of the above instances, be sure to contact your dermatologist immediately for a full check up. Remember, early diagnosis and treatment along with regular screening is the best way to ensure many happy, healthy summers to come.

    The Benefits of Portable Defibrillators

The onset of the portable defibrillator has single-handedly taken the life saving measures of the cardiac defibrillator out of the exclusive domain of the emergency room, and into the hands of a general public now able to help fight the tragedy of death by sudden cardiac arrest.

A defibrillator is a device developed to combat cardiac arrest or heart attack brought on by a fibrillation or irregular heart rhythm. This irregularity causes the heart to stop receiving enough blood and can result in sudden death if not treated properly.

The defibrillator delivers small electronic shocks to the heart designed to stimulate a return to a more manageable rate and rhythm. Specifically, an electric current is channel through the body into the heart via electrodes or paddles placed on the chest. The current causes the heart muscle to spasm or jolt, and hopefully ends any fibrillation threatening blow flow.

In years past the use of a heart defibrillator was place solely in the hand of heart physicians and emergency technicians. The bulky and difficult to use device was dangerous in the hands of anyone but a trained professional, and they typically were not seen outside of a hospital or medical setting. But with the development of smaller, easier to use, portable defibrillators, regular citizens can be called upon to be lifesavers.

These automated, portable defibrillators take much of the risk associated with their use by regular people. Most importantly, they come with the ability to assess whether or not the patient in question even needs an electric current, and if he or she does, it pre-determines the wattage or power level. A person cannot override the determination of the computer, so the potential for misuse is minimal.

In addition, the light weight and portable nature of the last defibrillators makes them perfect for storage and use at any number of public venues including schools, gate communities, airports and sporting events.

Zoll, one of the most well known make! rs of po rtable defibrillator products, have devices that make the life saving procedure easy, even for a person with little to no medical training or background.

The latest Zoll models specifically designed for public access are no bigger than a laptop computer and possess fully automated controls and instructions including voice prompts. They automatically detect what treatment, if any, is needed for the patient and give specific, step-by-step instructions on how to give the proper care. Minimally trained laypersons like security guards, flight attendants and office managers can use the portable defibrillator to potentially stave off death by cardiac arrest, or at least care for the patient until proper medical attention can be provided.

Despite some debate among experts regarding the benefits of a portable defibrillator in the home, there is no denying the advantage of increased access to life saving measures for cardiac arrest victims outside of the hospital setting. With nearly a million Americans dying each year as a result of cardiovascular disease, any measures that give a fighting chance to victims of sudden heart failure has to be regarded as a good thing.
